New York – In the 49-year history of the franchise, no New York Mets pitcher has ever thrown a no-hitter. Tonight at Citi Field in Flushing, New York, 23 year old Jonathan Niese nearly accomplished this feat. In fact, he almost went “one better.” He nearly pitched a perfect game.
Niese gave up just one hit and walked none in pitching a complete game 3-0 shutout over the San Diego Padres. After allowing a lead-off double in the third inning, Niese went on to retire 21 batters in a row. He dominated Padre batters, striking out 6 and throwing just 108 pitches overall.
An interesting note – Niese was born on October 27, 1986 – the same day that the Mets beat the Boston Red Sox in game seven to win that season’s World Series.
