New York — The Knicks continue to struggle to find good guard play this season. Over the course of this year, they have turned to, then benched Larry Hughes (since traded), Nate Robinson (since traded) and Mike D’Antoni favorite, Chris Duhon (buried on the bench without playing a minute since the Knicks acquired Sergio Rodriguez from Sacramento).
Meanwhile, playing in the Chinese Basketball League is old friend, Stephon Marbury, who, after a couple of games to get his legs and his shooting skills back to where they used to be, is lighting up the CBA with similar numbers to those he put up for 12 years in the NBA. Marbury is averaging nearly 21 points per game, almost 10 assists, six rebounds and two steals. He is shooting almost 52% from the field, including almost 36% from three point land. His court awareness and speed were very much apparent in his limited playing time for the Boston Celtics last season but the shot looked to be shot. With more playing time (averaging 33 minutes per game), his shooting percentage is outstanding now.
In three consecutive games, Marbury lit it up for 35, 34, and 30 points against three of the better teams in that faraway league, leading his Shanxi team, one of the league’s worst, to a 2-1 record.
There must be an NBA team that needs a career 20 and 8 point guard, who still looks to have more than enough left in the tank to help a playoff run.
His overall stats, through his first eight games, are below:
